
Summer School “International Law and Sports” – Prince Sultan University at the Europa-Institut

From June 29 to July 13, 2025, the Europa-Institut of Saarland University hosted a tailor-made Summer School on International Law and Sports for a student delegation from Prince Sultan University, Riyadh. Directed by Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, LL.M., Jean Monnet Chair for Sustainable and Secure EU Raw Materials Law and Policy, the program combined intensive academic content with institutional visits across Europe.
The academic sessions included:
- International Organisations & Structures: Sports Governance and Law (Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, LL.M., Director of the Europa-Institut, Saarland University)
- The European Union, EU Law and Sports (Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, LL.M., Director of the Europa-Institut, Saarland University)
- Spheres of Influence in Sport Policy – Public Authorities and Sports Organisations: True cooperation and mutual respect? (Jonas Burgheim, LL.B., LL.M., B&HRs Expert and President of German Centre for HRs&Sport)
- Sports Competition Law (Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, LL.M., Director of the Europa-Institut, Saarland University)
- The Sport Value Framework for Modern Sport Management (Prof. Dr. Bastian Popp, Institute for Trade & International Marketing, Saarland University)
- The Olympic Movement in focus: Olympic Games, Recent Reforms and a German Perspective (Johannes Curtius, International Relations Officer, German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB))
- Alternative Dispute Resolution in Sports (Mag. iur. Justus Heinze)
- Intellectual Property Rights in Sports (Prof. Dr. Neda Zdraveva, University of Skopje)
During a weekend trip to Paris, participants visited the Olympic Village and discussed the impact of the Olympic Games on hosting cities.
In Lausanne, the delegation explored:
- The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – presentation by Imen Larabi (Scientific Counsel, Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS))
- The Museum of Olympic Games and Olympic Study Centre
- Lecture on “International Sports and Human Rights”(Prof. Dr. Andreas Ziegler, Université de Lausanne)
The program continued in Bern with a visit to the World Trade Institute (WTI):
- “Introduction into the MILE and LL.M. Program”(Prof. Manfred Elsig,Professor of International Relations, Deputy Managing Director and Director of Research of the World Trade Institute of the University of Bern)
- “The Importance of the CAS in Sports”(RA Alexandre Zen-Ruffinen,Attorney at Etude INLAW, Neuchâtel)
- “Sports and Swiss Competition Law”(Prof. Dr. Philipp Zurkinden & RA Bernhard Lauterberg,Prager Dreifuss AG, Bern)
The certificate handover and a joint farewell lunch at the WTI marked the academic conclusion of the program.
Finally, participants traveled to Zurich, where the group visited the FIFA Museum before returning home.
