Summer School 2025 in Split: Artificial Intelligence and Law

From 7–13 September 2025, the Summer School "Artificial Intelligence and Law: Mastering the Future of Law in the AI Age" took place in Split, Croatia, bringing together students, academics, and experts from across Europe.

The week began on Sunday with arrivals and a first get-together led by Prof. Dr. Petar Bačić (University of Split) and Mag. iur. Meltem Yildirim, LL.M. (Europa-Institut, Saarland University). A lively pub quiz hosted by Dr. Mareike Fröhlich, LL.M., and Meltem Yildirim created a relaxed atmosphere for networking.

On Monday, Dr. Mareike Fröhlich formally opened the Summer School. The program featured stimulating lectures by Prof. Dr. Thomas Giegerich (Europa-Institut, Saarland University) on Human Rights in the Age of Technology and by Prof. Dr. Maja Nastic (University of Nish) on Digitalisation, AI and Human Rights.

Tuesday focused on AI and Data Protection, presented by Prof. Dr. Marija Boban (University of Split), followed by Prof. Dr. Enis Omerovic (University of Zenica) on Autonomous Weapons and International Responsibility.

Wednesday combined theory and practice: Ass. Ana Memeti, LL.M. (University of Belgrade) led a case study on AI in Humanitarian Law. The afternoon was free for participants to explore the city of Split.

On Thursday, Prof. Dr. Petar Bačić introduced Digitalisation and Elections. In the afternoon, Ass. Lejla Hasanovic, LL.M. (University of Sarajevo) presented on the Legal Implications of Artificial Intelligence for Business.

Friday’s sessions with Prof. Dr. Nina Gumzej (University of Zagreb) addressed Legal Research, Legal Profession and AIfollowed by an interactive workshop “AI Meets Legal Education: Navigating Law Studies in the Digital Age”.

The Summer School concluded on Saturday with the awarding of certificates, a joint feedback session, and a farewell discussion, marking the end of an inspiring and successful academic week in Split.
