From 8-10 May 2025, students of the Europa-Institut had the opportunity to attend Prof. Dr. Thomas Giegerich’s Summer Term Seminar on "Do Hard Times Make Bad Law?", held at the Europa-Institut and the Europäischen Akademie Otzenhausen gGmbH.

This intensive academic seminar offered an open and intellectually stimulating environment where participants presented their seminar papers and engaged in deep, critical discussions. Each student gave a 15-minute presentation, followed by a 30-minute group debate—creating a space for rigorous legal reflection and exchange.

📌 Key topics explored included:

  • ICJ proceedings: Genocide and international obligations (e.g., Palestine, Armenia–Azerbaijan, CEDAW case against Afghanistan)
  • ECJ case law: Women’s right to asylum, gender recognition, powers of sports associations
  • ECtHR jurisprudence: Ukraine v. Russia (Crimea); Daniel v. Hungary on assisted dying
  • Regulatory developments: EU's AI Act and the Council of Europe's Framework Convention on AI
  • Fundamental rights: EU accession to the ECHR; CFSP and judicial protection
  • Broader themes: Migration as a political instrument; regional accountability for international crimes (e.g., The Gambia)

This seminar not only broadened students' understanding of international and European law but also challenged them to consider the evolving role of legal systems in times of crisis.
