From April 20 to April 30, 2026, the Europa-Institut hosted a Spring School on the topic “Understanding International Trade: Regulatory Framework, Uzbekistan’s Accession to the WTO, and Global Trends in Protectionism,” welcoming thirteen selected doctoral and master’s students in law for a unique academic and cultural exchange.

The program, organized in collaboration with Tashkent State University of Law (Uzbekistan), offered participants an intensive learning experience that combined theory and practice in an engaging way. Over the course of ten days, the students immersed themselves in a wide-ranging program, guided by Prof. Dr. Marc Bungenberg, Director of the European Institute and holder of the Jean Monnet Chair for Safe and Sustainable Raw Materials Law, Dr. Afolabi Adekemi, research associate at the Chair of Civil Law, Legal Informatics, German and International Business Law at Saarland University as well as Legal Theory, Gustavo Adolfo Guarín Duque, Trade Counselor for the Permanent Mission of Colombia to the WTO, Dr. Philipp Reinhold, Europa-Institut, and Dr. Mareike Fröhlich, Europa-Institut.

In addition, participants explored the practical dimensions of resource policy during excursions to Strasbourg, where they visited the European Parliament and the Council of Europe, and to Frankfurt to visit the renowned law firm Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer. They also had the opportunity to explore the greater Saarbrücken region.

We are very pleased that this Spring School was able to take place and are grateful that the DAAD, together with the Federal Foreign Office, is providing financial support for the project.
